Roger Edgell, who has sadly passed away, was a highly respected guitarist whose career spanned more than five decades. From his early days playing in local bands during the 1960s, Roger went on to tour throughout the UK and Europe, performing with numerous groups and backing artists including Marty Wilde, Bert Weedon, Billy Fury and Joe Brown.
Although he never sought the limelight for himself, Roger earned the admiration of fellow musicians for his skill, professionalism and musicality. Friends remember him not only as an exceptional guitarist but also as a modest and kind-hearted man who valued friendship as much as music.
Even after retiring from regular performances, Roger’s love of music never diminished. Following his death, proceeds from the sale of his guitars have been donated to Play Produce Promote and Thorpe St Andrew School to support their music departments. It is a fitting tribute to a musician who believed in encouraging others to discover the joy of making music.
Roger’s career brought him many adventures, lifelong friendships and countless performances, but perhaps his greatest legacy is that his instruments will now help inspire a new generation of young musicians.
“Thanks to the kindness of his wife Sandra, Roger’s legacy is being continued through the Thorpe Creative Hub at Thorpe St Andrew school via the establishment of ‘The Roger Edgell Fund’ which will support our established program of developing original music and live performance. We hope to use the fund to provide opportunities for students to grow as songwriters, to perform in professional settings and most importantly to emphasise the joy of making music with the people around you.”

This generous donation, in memory of Roger Edgell, will help support the next generation of budding young musicians in Great Yarmouth.
The funding will enable Play Produce Promote to provide a range of performance-ready instruments that young people can borrow for rehearsals and gigs. For many aspiring musicians at the start of their journey, owning an instrument can be financially out of reach, so access to these instruments can make a real difference.
