A talented young musician supported by Norfolk Music Service has been recognised by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) after achieving the highest Grade 8 Piano examination result in Norfolk.
City of Norwich School student Joe Errington, 14, received the unexpected news in a letter from ABRSM informing him that he had been awarded a special prize in recognition of his outstanding examination result. He also received a £150 prize.
“It was a complete surprise,” his family said. “He was quite taken aback when he opened the letter.”
Joe began his musical journey at junior school, where he first developed an interest in playing keyboard through class music lessons. Formal piano tuition with a local teacher followed in Year 4, supporting the learning he had already begun independently at home.
His lessons continued into secondary school with Richard Ward, one of Norfolk Music Service’s peripatetic teachers, who supported Joe as he worked towards achieving his Grade 8 Piano.
As a Music Scholar, Joe regularly performs in his school orchestra and Jazz Big Band and has taken part in productions including We Will Rock You.
Joe is also a member of the Norfolk Youth Jazz Orchestra, led by Norfolk Music Service. Through the ensemble, he has developed his musicianship by collaborating and performing with other young musicians, supporting less experienced players and building lasting friendships through music.
While piano remains his principal instrument, Joe is also an accomplished saxophonist and is currently working towards Grade 6 Saxophone with Norfolk Music Service peripatetic teacher Anna Parker. This autumn, he will take the next step in his ensemble career by joining the Norfolk County Symphonic Wind Band on saxophone.
Joe’s achievement highlights the exceptional standard of young musicians across Norfolk and the opportunities available for young people to develop their musical skills through tuition and ensemble playing.
